"Okaeri" wins development fund from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture

The Nikkei project was one of the 13 winners of the National Feature Film Development Competition, organized by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

"Okaeri: the Spy of the Rising Sun" won a fund of 40,000 PEN for its development process thanks to the Peruvian Ministry of Culture's National Feature Film Development Competition initiative. The project was evaluated and selected unanimously by the jury, whose evaluation read as follows:

"For addressing a family story marked by various hardships and tragedies, reminding us of the harsh reality faced by families persecuted during times of war. In this case, the protagonist is a minor, which undoubtedly conveys an atmosphere of tenderness. The narrative shows us how, through the twists of life, Japanese migrants in Peru became victims of persecution, supported by world powers during World War II. Within this context, we see the protagonist striving to rescue one of her parents. The story highlights the importance of filial love, which can keep a family united. Furthermore, the project promotes human empathy toward all migrants around the world, as being far from their country or community places them in a vulnerable situation. Therefore, they are populations in need of humanitarian aid."
